Senior midfielder Caroline deLyra scored five goals and added one assist to lead a balanced attack and spark host Bay Shore to a 17-8 victory today over Middle Country in Conference 1 girls’ lacrosse.
Middle Country held a 3-2 lead 10 minutes into play, but the Marauders (2-0) stormed back, scoring the last six goals of the half to take a 9-3 lead into the break.
Bay Shore had plenty of offensive standouts. Sophomore midfielder Kyra Harney collected three goals and two assists and junior attack Carly Cox had two goals and three assists while Amanda Voges tallied three goals and Kaitlyn Arnold scored twice.
“In the beginning I felt like our shots were off and we weren’t really getting good possession of the ball,” said Bay Shore coach Allison Pfeffer. “But they kept fighting after the ball and I feel like that paid off in the end.”
Middle Country put together brief spurt to begin the second half, scoring the first two goals before allowing Bay Shore to push its lead back out to 11-5. Nikki Ortega and Shannon Coleman each scored four goals to lead the Mad Dogs (2-2).
“We had a game plan and for about the first half of the first half we stuck with that game plan and kept it tight,“ Middle Country coach Lindsay Dolson said. “We wanted to possess the ball and we kind of got away from that as we got a little bit tired and started throwing the ball away and had a couple of turnovers.”
The Mad Dogs were able to stick with the game plan early in each half but when they made their runs, the talented Marauders responded.
“We tried to win the faceoff war and the groundball war,“ Dolson said. “We came out strong in the second half so I commend them for that.
“Bay Shore is a very skilled team – probably a little more skilled than us -so that’s why we have to possess the ball a little bit longer and keep it in our sticks so we can handle the pressure.”
The Marauders, who went to the County Final in 2011 and won Suffolk County in 2010, have high expectations this year.
“We always feel pressure because we always want to do well,” Pfeffer said. “So whether we’re in the county final or fighting to get there each year there’s always pressure for us because we have a good program and we work hard.”
