Kieran Mullins collected two goals and three assists and John Maher scored three goals to ignite the Islip boys’ lacrosse team to an 11-4 victory Friday over host West Babylon.
“We came in here expecting a tough game because they beat East Islip,” said Islip coach Keith Scheidel. “West Babylon is always tough and today we proved we are getting better and going in the right direction, but we aren’t there yet.”
“This season we are going to go as far as our defense will take us,” Scheidel said, “I think we have some offensive ability but our defense is young and we have to improve on that aspect of the game.”
Jeremy Koch and Alex Finnegan also added two goals each for Islip (2-0).
“It was a great win,” Mullins said, “Everyone was working hard, everyone was ready; we came off of a good game last week (11-7 win over Division) and we just wanted to show what we can do.”
Both goalies played a strong game. Tyler Hartmann of West Babylon and Kevin Rafferty of Islip had 10 saves each.
After falling behind 3-0, West Babylon closed within 3-2 at the end of the first period. But its offense struggled as the Islip defense tightened.
Andrew Schweigert led West Babylon (1-1) with two goals.
“Of course we were disappointed,” said West Babylon coach Hans Haugen. “We were hoping to match up better with them; we had a key injury on defense that prevented us from matching up the way we wanted to with them but they played an outstanding game.”
“Although it could seem negative,” Haugen added, “it might be good for us as a team to learn we need to come out with a little more fire and a little more intensity.”
