Erin Cunningham scored two goals, including the clinching tally that sparked Ward Melville to a 6-5 victory over Sayville today in a non-league girls’ lacrosse game.
Cunningham’s goal with 1:31 left in the game gave the Patriots (1-0) a 6-4 lead. Emily Meier, who along with Connie Nielsen had two goals for Sayville (1-1), had the final tally with two seconds to play.
“I thought that we played really well for our first game,” Cunningham said. “We obviously need to work on a lot, but our girls did a really good job and I think we have the potential to go really far this year.”
Meier scored the first goal of the game at the 19:01 and Ward Melville’s Kelsey Nagle answered with 10:21 left in the first half. Sayville later took a 2-1 lead in this see0saw game, but Ward Melville took a 4-3 halftime lead as both defenses did a strong job of keeping the players away from their goal.
“Sayville is a tough competitor,” said Ward Melville coach Kerri Kilkenny. “We did not play our best today, it was a low scoring game and I will give credit to Sayville for playing a feisty defense.
“We have 25 girls on our roster; I’m returning 17 girls and I see huge potential in these girls. Hopefully it is a promising year for us.”
Both goalies had solid games. Ward Melville’s Emma Jehle had seven saves and Sayville’s Gianna Minoque had six saves.
“We played against a high level team,” said Sayville coach Adam Sznitken. “I definitely know we have to work on a lot of stuff, but overall I’m happy about this game but not satisfied.
“I feel we have a very good team and the skills are going to be there so I have high expectations for this team.”
