From Press Release
On the heels of a stingy defensive effort that spearheaded St. John’s 8-5 victory over Siena on March 3, junior long stick midfielder Dillon Ayers (Lynbrook) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his tough performance.
Against the Saints, Ayers totaled five groundballs and caused three turnovers as the Red Storm had its best defensive effort since holding Providence to five goals on April 10, 2010.
Prior to the 2012 campaign, Ayers was the first St. John’s player ever named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team after a solid sophomore season. The LSM led the Red Storm in both groundballs (56) and caused turnovers (21) for 2011.
Through the team’s first three games, Ayers is second on the team in groundballs (12) and first in caused turnovers (4). Ayers ranks in the top-100 in the NCAA for both groundballs and caused turnovers per game.
St. John’s has showed grittiness early on as the team ranks third in the BIG EAST at 31 groundballs per game.
St. John’s lacrosse welcomes No. 3/6 Syracuse to DaSilva Field next weekend for an early season BIG EAST showdown. Keep up with Red Storm lacrosse all season long at RedStormSports.com and on Twitter by following @STJ_Lacrosse.
