A wake for lacrosse leader and coach Kurt Burmeister, 46, of Smithtown, will be held at the Branch Funeral Home in Smithtown on Thursday from 5-8 p.m., followed by a service Friday at 10 a.m.
Mr. Burmeister, 46, went into cardiac arrest Monday while coaching a clinic for new youth girls’ lacrosse players, according to reports.
Mr. Burmeister coached fifth grade and travel teams in Smithtown and was recently named president of Suffolk County Girls Lacrosse.
The family has requested that any player who wishes to come please be at the funeral home between 5-6:00 pm on Thursday to show their support. Players should wear some sort of Smithtown apparel (Jersey, shooting shirt, etc.) as a sign of solidarity for the family.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; two daughters, Gretchen and Lili; and parents, Kenneth and Barbara Burmeister.
In lieu of flowers, his friends and family requested that donations be made to the newly formed Kurt Burmeister Memorial Foundation. The Foundation will provide additional financial support for his wife Susan and his two 10 year old daughters, This foundation will also provide financial support to young women who wish to play and develop their lacrosse skills through participation in Smithtown girl’s lacrosse camps and club play.
