After a perfect 3-0 start to the season, the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team has swept the first weekly America East awards of the season. The conference announced Tuesday that junior Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y.) is America East Player of the Week, junior Melissa Rotante (Norwalk, Conn.) is America East Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Michelle Rubino (East Setauket, N.Y.) is America East Rookie of the Week.

Cook averaged 4.33 goals over the first three games of her Seawolves career, pouring in six goals in a 13-10 win over Colgate, just one goal shy of matching the program single-game record. She followed that performance by notching three goals and two assists in a 19-3 win vs. Manhattan and then scoring four goals in an 18-5 victory over Central Connecticut State.

Rotante anchored a Seawolves defense that averaged just six goals allowed through the first three games of the season. The three goals allowed to Manhattan tied for the fewest in program history. Rotante grabbed six ground balls and forced two turnovers in the three games. One of her caused turnovers directly led to a goal vs. Manhattan. In addition, she played solid man-to-man defense, committing only one foul in the three games.

Rubino had a spectacular collegiate debut through her first three games with seven goals, nine points, 26 draw controls, seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. She had five points in her official debut vs. Colgate, matching the Seawolves program record for most points by a freshman in her first match. Then as an encore, she set the program single-game record for draw controls with 12 vs. Manhattan. She controlled 11 more draws against Central Connecticut State.

The three Seawolves were a part of a banner week that includes the program’s first 3-0 start since the 2007 season. Under first-year head coach Joe Spallina, Stony Brook is looking to win its first-ever America East Championship. The Seawolves are back in action Sunday, Feb. 26 at Monmouth at 1 p.m.
