Men’s lacrosse: Hofstra is No. 14 in USILA DI rankings

The Hofstra Pride Men’s Lacrosse team remained in the top 15 in the first regular season Division I Top 20 polls of the 2012 season that were announced Monday.

The Pride is ranked 14th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division I Coaches Poll and 13th in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll.

The Pride, who were 14th in the USILA Preseason Poll, received 74 points in the balloting to share 14th place with the Crimson of Harvard. Hofstra and Harvard will meet in Cambridge on March 3. The Pride opened their 2012 season last Saturday with an 11-9 victory over Sacred Heart at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The first regular season USILA Poll is headed up by the Virginia Cavaliers, the defending national champions. Virginia picked up nine first place votes and 235 points. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, who defeated Duke last weekend, are second with Johns Hopkins, a winner over Towson on Saturday, in third place. The Tar Heels of North Carolina are fourth while Cornell, who is yet to open the season, is fifth. Syracuse takes the sixth spot with Maryland seventh, CAA-foe UMass is eighth, Villanova ninth and Duke tenth.

In the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll, Hofstra is 13th after being 12th in the preseason poll. Virginia is in the top spot followed by Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame and North Carolina. Syracuse is sixth followed by Maryland, Duke, Villanova and Massachusetts to round out the top 10.
The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) has released its Division I Men’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Preseason Poll for February 20.
