From Press Release
The LIU Brooklyn women’s lacrosse team was tabbed tenth in the Northeast Conference preseason coaches’ poll, as announced by the league office. The poll was conducted among the league’s coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team.
The Blackbirds closed the 2011 season 1-15 overall with a 1-8 mark in NEC play. Sophomore Katie Williams served as an anchor for the young LIU squad last season, earning a spot on the NEC All-Rookie Team after scoring 22 goals and five assists for a .702 shooting percentage. She also tallied 29 ground balls, collected 27 draw controls and created 13 caused turnovers. Sophomores Shakoya Smith (Baldwin) and Kimberly Kovar (Plainedge) will also look to build on successful rookie campaigns.
One of two seniors on the team, Jacqueline Simonian (Farmingdale) started every game at goal last season, logging 114 saves, while classmate Amber Meek will bring leadership to a team that features mainly underclassmen.
Last year’s champion Quinnipiac was picked to finish first, receiving six first place votes while Robert Morris was picked to finish second. Mount St. Mary’s picked up the third place spot, while Monmouth and Sacred Heart were picked to finish fourth and fifth. Bryant grabbed the sixth place spot, with Central Connecticut State, Saint Francis (Pa.), Wagner and the Blackbirds rounding out the field.
The top four teams in the regular season standings will qualify for the Northeast Conference Tournament to be held at the site of the highest seed on April 27 and 29.
Long Island opens its regular season at George Washington on Saturday.
