Maryland freshman Kelly McPartland (Farmingdale) enjoyed a brilliant day as the No. 2 terrapins routed visiting Delaware, 21-4, Thursday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Head coach and former Terrapin All-American Cathy Reese won her 100th career game at Maryland and senior attacker Karri Ellen Johnson scored career goal No. 188 to move into sole possession of third on the Terps’ all-time goals list.
On a night full of accomplishment, the Terps (2-0) were simply dominant. Brooke Griffin netted a game-high five goals, while Johnson added four and McPartland had three goals, four draw controls, one caused turnover, one assist and one draw control. Alex Aust also tallied three to pace Maryland’s devastating attack.
For the second consecutive game, Maryland began the match on a 9-0 run. The Terps commanded a hefty 14-1 advantage through the game’s first 30 minutes and picked up a 10-goal cushion to initiate a running clock a mere 23 minutes into the contest. Brittany Dipper tallied three saves in the first half to lead Maryland defensively.
The Terps were a perfect 9-for-9 in clears and held Delaware (0-1) to 7-for-13.
Freshman defender Shanna Brady (St. Anthony’s) started and contributed a groundball, caused turnover and a draw control. Fellow frosh Erin Collins (West Islip) added two draw controls.
Maryland had a total of nine of players tally goals. Kristy Black and Johnson picked up three assists apiece to help guide an attack that is averaging 20 goals per game through the first two contests of the season. Johnson’s goal with 13:35 remaining vaulted her past Kelly Amonte-Hiller for third all-time in career goals at Maryland.
