Women’s lacrosse: Garden City junior defense Schmitt commits to Johns Hopkins

Garden City junior defense Lily Schmitt has committed to play Division I lacrosse at Johns Hopkins University.

Club Affiliation: Long Island Yellow Jackets

Major lacrosse honors: U-15 National Champions, NYS Champion 2010, NYS Champion 2011, Long Island Metro School Girls 2011, 2011 Unsung Hero Award for Garden City, NY State Final Sportsmanship Award 2011.

Academic honors, service projects: “Principal’s List, Scholar Athlete, Junior Director of Charlie’s Champions Foundation, a foundation created by my family to benefit the Cancer Center For Kids at Winthrop Hospital where my brother, Charlie, was treated for Leukemia.”

What will you major in/study? “I have not made a definite decision but I think I am leaning towards majoring in Psychology. I am still researching several other fields to see what interests me the most.”

Why did you choose Hopkins? “Hopkins is simply the perfect fit for me. I was looking for a school that offers top academics and athletics and Hopkins definitely excels in both. Between the amazing coaches, campus, and players, there is no other school I’d rather have chosen.”

What is your HS team’s outlook for the season? “This season we’re looking forward to a very exciting and challenging schedule with the addition of a few Maryland teams. We intend to defend our undefeated streak and win our seventh straight New York State Championship.”

Additional Comments: “I would like to thank my parents, my brothers, and my coaches Diane Chapman, Gina Sambus, Dane Soloman, and Danielle Skakandi for all their support and encouragement!! I also want to thank Coach (Janine) Tucker, Coach Tara, and Coach Jen for all they have done for me. Looking forward to a great four years!”
