Adelphi University received nine first-place votes and 99 points overall to take the top spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Preseason Poll for the upcoming season.

Adelphi also ranked second in the nation according to Lacrosse Magazine in the publication’s preseason rankings released in late December.

The Panthers, who went 16-3 overall and 9-1 in the Northeast-10 last season, won the conference title game a year ago before advancing to the national championship game against Mercyhurst, where they were narrowly ousted, 9-8.

Adelphi brings back their top scorer in senior Joe Vitale (Lynbrook), who tallied 40 goals and 30 assists for 70 points last season while his 3.68 points per game mark was tops among Northeast-10 leaders. Senior Shane Wynn (Oceanside) also returns after totaling 51 points on 28 goals and 23 assists.

Le Moyne College (12-2, 10-0 NE-10) placed second in the coaches’ poll, receiving 91 points and one first-place vote. The Dolphins last year earned the No. 1 seed in the Northeast-10 Championship before they were upset by Merrimack College in the semifinals. They were however ranked fifth in the nation in Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason rankings and led the conference in goals against average (4.64) last year.

Merrimack (11-6, 6-4 NE-10) came in at No. 3 in the poll, receiving one first-place vote and 83 points overall. The Warriors came on strong at the end of the season last year before falling to Adelphi in the Northeast-10 Championship contest and were ranked No. 8 nationwide by Lacrosse Magazine. They will welcome back junior Corey Lunney after the midfielder led the team and was third in the Northeast-10 with 39 goals last season.

Rounding out the top-5 in the coaches’ poll was Bentley University (7-7, 7-3 NE-10) with 70 points and Saint Michael’s College (10-6, 8-2 NE-10) with 63 points.

The remainder of the poll included Assumption College (9-7, 5-5 NE-10) with 49 points, Pace University (5-9, 2-8 NE-10) with 40 points, Southern New Hampshire University (4-9, 3-7 NE-10) with 39 points, Saint Anselm College (3-11, 3-7 NE-10) with 33 points, Franklin Pierce University (3-10, 1-9 NE-10) with 28 points and American International College (1-13, 1-9 NE-10) with 10 points.
