From Press Release
The Navy women’s lacrosse team was voted the 2012 preseason favorite to win a third straight Patriot League title, the league office announced Thursday. Navy was the unanimous choice by the opposing coaches and sports information directors, garnering all 12 of the possible votes. School coaches and SIDs cannot vote for their own team.
Additionally, junior attack Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville) was the unanimous choice as the 2012 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. DePompeo was the 2011 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and the Patriot League Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
DePompeo ranked third in the country with 99 points (57 goals and 42 assists) and garnered All-American honors from WomensLax.com in 2011. She also became the first Midshipman to earn IWLCA All-South Region honors after being chosen to the second team. DePompeo is the second Mid to earn all-preseason honors from the Patriot League, as Caitlin Mandrin Hill was chosen as the league’s preseason defensive player of the year in 2010.
Navy tallied 72 total points on its 12 first-place votes and 2011 runner-up Colgate was second with 61 points and the remaining two first-place votes. Lehigh was third with 53 points followed by American (41), Holy Cross (28), Lafayette (27) and Bucknell (12). Lehigh senior Leigh Ann Torcivia was tabbed as the preseason defensive player of the year.
Navy is the first team to be the unanimous preseason favorite since Colgate in 2006 and this is the second year in a row that Navy has been picked to finish as league champs.
The Midshipmen have already won two Patriot League titles in just four years of competition. The Mids have made the four-team postseason tournament every season and have advanced to three straight league title games.
Navy defeated Colgate in a thrilling come-from-behind, 15-14, win at Colgate in the 2011 league title game. The Mids trailed the Raiders by five goals in the second half before igniting their comeback. Navy then knocked off Quinnipiac, 20-5, in the NCAA Play-In Game to advance to a second straight NCAA Tournament.
Head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time leader in wins (394) in NCAA lacrosse and is aiming to become the first coach to win 400 games this season. Timchal will be entering her fifth season at the helm at Navy and her 30th season overall as a head coach.
The Mids return nine starters and five all-league players to the 2012 squad. Navy will open the 2012 season at High Point on February 11 and will host William & Mary in its league opener on February 15. Navy plays its home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Admission to all women’s games is free.
