MLL draft: Lizards take Pennell (Smithtown West) with first selection; Turri (West Islip) goes 9th to Charlotte

The Long Island Lizards selected Cornell University senior and 2007 Smithtown West graduate Rob Pannell with the first overall pick in Friday night’s Major League Lacrosse draft at the Downtown Marriott in Philadelphia.

Pannell was the USILA Division I Player of the Year last season when he had 42 goals and 47 assists to help the Big Red to the NCAA quarterfinals. Pannell is a two-time winner of the Jack Turnbull Award as the outstanding Division I attackman.

The Lizards acquired the top pick and attackman Max Quinzani from the expansion Charlotte Hounds in December for a package of players and picks.

The first pick of the second round was Duke midfielder Justin Turri (West Islip), who was a USILA All-America second team selection las5t year with 14 goals and 11 assists.
