The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team will play a challenging 17-game schedule that includes two matches against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship Final Four last season and nine matches at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, the team announced Tuesday. Last season, Stony Brook’s opponents produced a .547 winning percentage and earned four NCAA Championship bids.
The marquee matchup at home will be a March 5 date against Duke, which went 15-5 last season and lost to Maryland, 14-8, in the national semifinals at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves will play at Maryland March 20 against a Terrapins team that fell to Northwestern in the national championship game, which was also held at LaValle Stadium.
The Seawolves will play two other teams that earned bids into the NCAA Championship. SBU will play at Florida March 14 and will play defending America East Champion Albany on April 21.
Stony Brook will kick off the season with three straight home games, beginning Feb. 11 against Colgate, the seventh consecutive season the Seawolves and Raiders will open the season against each other. SBU will follow with matchups against Manhattan (Feb. 15) and Central Connecticut State (Feb. 19).
After a Feb. 25 date at Monmouth, the Seawolves will head to Baltimore to battle Johns Hopkins on March 3. Then begins a tough stretch of three straight against NCAA Tournament teams (Duke, Florida, Maryland).
After a home date with Marist (March 24) and road visit to Iona (March 27), the Seawolves will open America East play at Binghamton on March 31. The Seawolves will host UMBC (April 4) and Vermont (April 7) the following week and then play their final non-conference game of the year against Yale on April 11.
The conference season wraps up with games at Boston University (April 14) and Albany (April 21) before closing the season at home against New Hampshire on April 28.
The Seawolves will be looking to qualify for the America East Championship, which takes place May 3 & 5 at the site of the regular season champion. The winner of the tournament earns the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The national semifinals and national championship game will be held at LaValle Stadium for the second consecutive year.
Stony Brook is under first-year head coach Joe Spallina, who previously guided Adelphi to three consecutive NCAA Div. II national championships. He returns 13 letterwinners from last season and brings in 15 newcomers as the team looks to win its first-ever conference championship.
