The three-time defending National Champions Adelphi women’s lacrosse team has been ranked second in Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason poll.

It sits behind Northeast-10 foe, Le Moyne, while cross town rivals C.W. Post and Dowling College rank third and fourth, respectively, with national runner up Limestone rounding out the top-five. Senior Erica Devito (Shoreham-Wading River) was named the Preseason Player of the Year.

The Panthers are coming off their third consecutive National Championship and are riding a 25-game win streak extending back to the 2010 season. Last year, Adelphi had four NCAA Statistical Champions and six IWLCA All-Americans along with a slew of other post season accolades en route to a perfect 20-0 season.

The Adelphi women’s lacrosse team has not been ranked #1 heading into the season since the 2009 season when they were picked third in the preseason poll.

Devito had a stellar 2010, earning numerous honors including IWLCA First-Team All-America and All-Region status, First-Team All-NE-10 and was named the NE-10 Tournament MVP. She compiled a team leading 77 goals to compliment her 29 assists for 106 points on the year.

C.W. Post returns to the field under the direction of fifth-year head coach Meghan McNamara. C.W. Post completed the 2010 season with 13-4 overall record and 7-1 slate in the ECC.

The Pioneers return three IWLCA All-Americans including seniors Chelsea Donaldson (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.), and sophomore Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.), along with 2010 All-American Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.), a Tewaarton Trophy nominee who missed last season due to injury. The Pioneers return a total of seven All-East Coast Conference players along with four All-Region selections to the field in 2011.

McNamara and the Pioneers kick off their season March 2 at 4 p.m. as they host St. Anselm in their season opener.

Dowling will begin their defense of its ECC women’s lacrosse championship on Mar. 3 against Saint Anslem College at Golden Lions Field.
