Men’s recruits: NYIT signs nine players, all from Long Island

NYIT head lacrosse coach Bill Dunn announced the signing of nine scholastic student-athletes to National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at NYIT. The group will begin classes at NYIT in the fall of 2012.

“We are elated with our incoming recruiting class,” said Dunn. “There is a wealth of talented future student-athletes. We are pleased with the quality of these student-athletes, not only as lacrosse players but as outstanding students and individuals.”

Pat Fleming
Goalie • Sayville, N.Y. (Sayville HS)
Coach Dunn on Fleming: “Patrick is a great stopper who has good vision in the clearing game. A good communicator, he will compete for the starting spot early in his career.”
Fleming will enter his senior season in 2012 with more than 400 saves and a .680 save percentage. A two-time Suffolk County Long Island Showcase selection, Fleming earned all-county honors as a sophomore and junior, and was named team MVP in 2011. He also played two seasons of varsity football as a starting linebacker and helped the team to a 2011 undefeated season and the Long Island Championship.

Corey Gamblin
Defense/LSM • Lake Grove, N.Y. (Sachem North HS)
Coach Dunn on Gamblin: “Corey has great size and is extremely smart and skilled. We are hoping he can break into the rotation early in his career.”
Gamblin played two seasons at Hicksville and helped the Comets to the county championships in 2009. As a sophomore he scored 12 goals and dished out six assists. He played his junior season at Sachem North and had two goals. In 2010, Gamblin was named to the all-star team at the King of the Hill tournament and was invited to Blue Chip and Top 205.

Jake Gaspari
Defense • Levittown, N.Y. (Division Avenue HS)
Coach Dunn on Gaspari: “He is an extremely aggressive defenseman who has the tools to contribute early in his career.”
A two sport athlete from Division Avenue High School Gaspari has started on varsity since 10th grade. He helped the Blue Dragons to a 16-2 record as a sophomore and a semifinal appearance in the Nassau County Conference B tournament. Gaspari had a successful junior campaign with one goal, seven assists and 84 groundballs. He also captained the football team and is a member of the LI Express club team, Division Avenue business honor society, key club and student newspaper.

Ryan Gaspari
Goalie • Levittown, N.Y. (Division Avenue HS)
Coach Dunn on Gaspari: “Ryan is a tough-nosed stopper with good skills outside of the goal. He will compete early for a starting role with the Bears.”
A two-sport athlete at Division Avenue High School, Gaspari has more than a .500 save percentage. He is also a member of the LI Express club team, Division Avenue Business Honor Society, key club, school newspaper and is a peer leader. He also plays football for the Blue Dragons.

Steven Hartnett
Midfield/Face-off Specialist • Ronkonkoma, N.Y. (Connetquot HS)
Coach Dunn on Hartnett: “Steven will compete as one of our face-off middies from day one. He has a ton of upside and potential.”
Hartnett has played varsity lacrosse for two seasons at Connetquot High School and helped the XX to the Suffolk County Final Four in 2011. As a junior, he was named the team’s Unsung Hero. Hartnett also played two years of varsity football as a cornerback and right back.

Ryan Kellerman
Defense • East Setauket, N.Y. (Ward Melville HS)
Coach Dunn on Kellerman: “Ryan comes from a top program and is extremely aggressive and athletic. He has the tools to see playing time right away.”
Kellerman is a two-sport athlete from Ward Melville High School, who has lettered two seasons in both football and lacrosse. With the lacrosse team, he saw action in 10 games last season and played with the Ward Melville summer team, which won the Hot Beds tournament in 2011. For his efforts, he was selected as a Hot Beds All-Star.

Shawn Murphy
Attack • Holbrook, N.Y. (Sachem North HS)
Coach Dunn on Murphy: “Shawn is a versatile and skilled player who can play attack or midfield. He has the skills to be a feeder and/or scorer for us. He is probably the most athletic of all of our recruits this year.”
Our second recruit from Sachem North, Murphy helped the team to two Super 6 Championships and two Suffolk County A playoff appearances. As a junior he scored 20 points on 14 goals and six assists. He also collected 26 ground balls. As a sophomore, Murphy was named to the Suffolk Country Top 20 Rising team. Murphy is a member of Sachem North’s Senior Mentoring Club, Varsity Club and Senior Club. He also played volleyball and was named all-league in 2011. Murphy also volunteers with youth indoor lacrosse clinics.

Eric Talbot
Midfielder • Holbrook, N.Y. (Sachem North HS)

Coach Dunn on Talbot: “Eric is a skilled goals scorer who will help us on the offensive end. He has the ability to supply scoring punch from anywhere on the field.”
Our final recruit from Sachem North has played varsity lacrosse since 10th grade. As a junior in 2011, Talbot tallied 16 points on 12 goals and four assists. He also had five EMO goals and collected 20 groundballs.
