Excuse Lucas Clay for feeling a little more confident while firing on goal these days.

The Garden City junior attackman was one of five members of the Long Island Sting selected to participate Sunday in professional lacrosse superstar Paul Rabil’s unique shooting clinic called “Under My Wing.”

Participating in Paul Rabil's shooting clinic at the Red Bull Arena were; (Left to Right) Bobby Young, Lucas Clay, Austin Williams, Tanner Barbieri, Paul Rabil, Vail Urso, Danny Simonetti, John Longordo, Liam Young, Paul Houck

Held Sunday at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., the clinic was organized in conjunction with Warrior/Red Bull and the F-4 Showbine tournament at Flemington. Eight of the top players from the tourney were pre-selected to participate and two others that won the shooting contest at the Showbine’s combine earned their spots.

Others from the Sting that competed were Cold Spring Harbor senior Daniel Simonetti, and Manhasset juniors Bobby and Liam Young, Manhasset (Manhasset). Senior Daniel O’Connell of Chaminade was unable to compete.

Clay said Rabil was a great teacher.

“He was great,” said Clay. “Just having him there to show you what you did wrong; and then he’d fix it. Just by turning your hips I can add five miles to my shot.

“He is a great guy and he was really helpful. He was friendly and he knew what he was stalking about.”

What was the best advice Rabil gave?

“Keep my head up and hide my stick from the goalie so he doesn’t get any insight to where the ball is going to go,” Clay said.

Rabil was a four-time USILA All-American and a two-time NCAA Division 1 champion at Johns Hopkins. At the pro level, he plays for the Boston Cannons of the MLL and the Washington Stealth of the NLL. He has won two MLL MVP awards and a championship title in both leagues.

Each player had a personalized locker filled with gifts from Warrior, a top lacrosse apparel company. Each player received T-shirts, shorts, cleats, shoes, helmets, pads and sticks.
