Island Trees senior midfielder/attack Emily Lucas has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Monmouth University.
Emily Lucas log:
High School: Island Trees
Graduation Year: 2012
College Choice: Monmouth
Club Team: Long Island Yellow Jackets
Major lacrosse honors: All-Conference C pick.
Academic honors, service projects: I maintain a 3.6 average, scholar athlete award 3 years, academic achievement award 3 years, principal high honors 3 years, and member of National Honor society since my junior year.
Why did you choose school? “The more I looked in to Monmouth, the more fascinating things that I discovered about the school, and the more I felt the desire to go there. Both academically and athletically, Monmouth was the perfect fit for me. Monmouth has that small class environment that I am comfortable with and, and is the school that will prepare me for a successful future. Another excellent thing about this school is that it is taught by professors and not teacher assistants, and to me that was exactly what I wanted.
“The most important reason that led me to commit to Monmouth is I want to be coached by Coach (Denise) Wescott. She played goalie for the Maryland Terps and has coached many different teams across America and many countries as well including the German Women’s National Team. For me to have caught her eye was something I am honored about. I respect her as a coach and as a person and I know she will teach me everything she knows to get me to the best of my ability. There have also been some great athletes that have played pro sports at Monmouth. Miles Austin for the Dallas Cowboys, and Christie Rampone, captain of the USA Women’s Soccer Team. Monmouth University is best described as a hidden gem. If you never visited there you would never know about it, but since I know about, I look forward to being apart of it already! I am very excited to be apart of a great team and hoping to contribute to a northeast conference championship victory!”
What is your HS team’s outlook for next year? “This year is definitely going to be a challenge for us since we graduated 12 seniors. I want to show my team that although we are in a tough conference playing teams like Cold Spring Harbor, North Shore and Locust Valley, there is still hope for us. Life is full of struggles and for my team we have to come together to really become successful and have a great season. As for me, my goal is to end my senior year of lacrosse by leaving it all on the field including my pride for the game and love for the sport.”
Other comments: “I am now staying conditioned and improving my stamina on the field by running cross country. Winter track will also help me with my speed and I have a private trainer that is going to physically and mentally prepare me for lacrosse at the next level.”
